Nunhead Cemetery Open Day

Once I'd adjusted to the throngs of people in a usually quiet place, I had a go at photographing the birds of prey. Something I didn't find easy as it was really rather crowded, lots of jostling and elbows. Not my idea of fun, really.

If I learnt anything that day it was that I don't take decent pictures when under any kind of pressure. If only we had barn owls in the back yard.

Nunhead Cemetery Open Day

One of the things I did do this summer was to go up to Nunhead Cemetery for their annual open day. In ten years it was first time I'd actually made it to this event. I'm sure that the opportunity to photograph birds of prey gave the extra encouragement. It was soon confirmed that I don't function especially well when surrounded by crowds of people. Instead of wandering around the site, I opted to stay and acclimatise to just one area. Whilst my medication kicked in I was feeling somewhat on edge, so I sat beneath the trees with the wood turners. Photographing them from my perch was a great distraction.

 

 

Those were the wood turners, but I shall be back with birds.

Some random things

I've also made it up to Nunhead Cemetery recently. We're very lucky to have this beautiful place on our doorstep. Whilst I was up there I managed to take these pictures. I can't tell you what I'd do for a lens with a longer reach.

Here's a little robin that I spied in Nunhead Cemetery in early spring. For some technical reason beyond my capabilities, it's a picture that's best viewed when clicked on for a larger view.

Nunhead Cemetery

Our local cemetery is one of my favourite places in all the world. Most of it is given over to a nature reserve. It's wild and overgrown, yet carefully tended by FONC. It's a great place to visit, so if you get the chance I highly recommend it!

Parakeets

The first birds I ever saw in London were a pair of Ring-Necked Parakeets. Nobody had mentioned that they're quite common around here so I assumed they were escaped pets. Being as beautiful as they are, they look very tropical against the drab of SE London on a grey day.
